MY EXPERIENCE WITH PATIENTS AS AN EXTERN

Well as you all know I am an optometry student currently in my final year, and during my school’s supposed “semester break,” I decided to attach myself to an eye clinic here in Lagos. I have been here for about 6 weeks and I would say again I am in love with my profession. One thing I realized is that what we in read in books is a little bit different from what we see in the real life. I won’t be revealing any patient’s condition because that would break the rule of patient confidentiality, but I would use some arbitrary examples. For instance, we have different ways in which refraction can be done but using the steps might take time on a patient and that would reduce the patient’s cooperation which would in turn reduce the accuracy of the results gotten from refraction. Let me briefly let you know what refraction is in a very simple way you would understand.  Refraction is an eye examination that determines the power of lenses you need to improve your vision. Myopia, Hypero...

EARLY MORNING URINE AND THE EYE!!!

Image
As Nigerians, I am very sure we have heard that early morning urine cures Apollo, but what we all know as apollo is medically known as conjunctivitis. Conjunctivitis is the inflammation of the conjunctiva, and it can be caused by so many things. Maybe in the next post I will delve into specifics of what can cause conjunctivitis. Some of us reading this post don’t even know what the conjunctiva is or what it looks like, I will try to break it down. You know when a transparent piece of nylon is covering that agege bread that we love so much, remember that we can see the bread clearly through the nylon, but that does not make the nylon insignificant because we have to go through the nylon to eat the bread. So is the conjunctiva, it’s like a transparent nylon covering the ‘white part’ of the eye which is known as the sclera, it also lines the inner layer of the eyelids. Below is a picture that will help you understand.     In conjunctivitis, the conjunctiva blood vessel...

Is Optometry worth it?

When I tell people I am studying optometry, the next thing they ask me is “was it your first choice?”. Of course, it wasn’t my first choice, Medicine and Surgery was the initial plan and I wanted to specialize in ophthalmology but due to my low JAMB score of 206, it would have been impossible to have studied that in Nigeria, so I went for Optometry. In my first year, it wasn’t looking like Optometry was something serious because of courses I was offering Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. In my second year it seemed like the heat was turned on a little when I encountered Biochemistry and Microbiology. I don’t think I would forget the nights of trying study the 20 Amino acids and their chemical structures, it was such a hassle.   I finally fell in love with Optometry in my third year, I enjoyed reading because it felt I was making new discoveries. Ocular Anatomy, Ocular Pharmacology, General Pathology, Human Physiology, General Anatomy, Geometrical Optics, Physiological Optic...

WHO IS AN OPTOMETRIST?

Well as you all know I am a student of Optometry in Abia State University and on gaining admission into the department of Optometry I thought an Optometrist was an Optician, so I would say its not new for someone to be ignorant about who an Optometrist is.         Optometrists are the primary health care practitioners of the eye and visual system who provide comprehensive eye and vision care, which includes; refraction and dispensing, detection/diagnosis and management of diseases in the eye and the rehabilitation of conditions of the visual system. This the definition adopted by The World Council Optometry and World Health Organisation. This definition includes professional terms and not everyone will still quite get who an Optometrist is, that is why I will try to the best of my ability to explain further.          An Optometrist being a primary health care practitioner of the eye...

DO YOU KNOW?

Do you know that reading in dim light does not harm the eyes?

INSTRUMENTS USED TO OBTAIN AND CORRECT REFRACTIVE ERROR

Image
Refractive errors occurs when the shape of the eye prevents light emanating from infinity to form image on the retina. The length of the eyeball, changes in the shape of the cornea, or aging of the lens can cause refractive error. The most common types of refractive errors are myopia, hyperopia, presbyobia, and astigmatism. Below are the instrument used to obtain refractive status of the eye.

Classical and Operant Conditioning- Comparison

Classical and operant conditioning share many of the same basic principles and procedures. For example, Kimble (1961) has pointed out that the basic principles of acquisition, extinction, spontaneous recovery, and stimulus generalization are common to both types of learning.  There are several differences, however, between classical and operant conditioning.

ANYONE CAN HAVE CATARACT

Image
Cataracts are the most common cause of vision loss in people over 40 and are the principal cause of blindness in the world. There are most cases of cataracts worldwide than glaucoma. Cataract refers to any opacity within the crystalline lens. Opacities may be acquired or congenital, focal or generalized, large or small, multiple or singular, and may affect any layer of the lens, nucleus or cortex, anterior or posterior.

WOMEN MORE VULNERABLE TO OCULAR HYPERTENSION

One of the most vexing issues facing the eye world is the matter of intraocular pressure and its relationship to glaucoma (an eye defect caused by an imbalance in intra-ocular pressure of the eye). Optic Nerve damage is present mostly in eyes with elevated IOP and its rare to find glaucoma in eyes with low IOP.

Envisioned

Vision is arguably the most precious gift of nature as it enables us to perceive and appreciate the beautiful things of life. Like; raindrops on roses, a Plainfield with those pretty little flowers dancing with the wind, and creeping crawling insects with colourful cuticles. How about the colorful shells and peacefulness of the early morning beach or river banks.
